Description

Medical Semiology is a didactic discipline that provides general clinical training for medical students and future doctors. It teaches the technique of examining the patient, diagnostic reasoning and medical thinking. The teachers who teach medical semiology are true masters and often become role models for future doctors.
The year of debut of the subject of Medical Semiology at the Faculty of Medicine in Craiova was 1 October 1972, the first two teachers being Prof. dr. Doc. Vintilă V. Mihăilescu and Prof. dr. Marius Georgescu, at that time assistant professor.
Over the years, the Discipline of Medical Semiology, with its two medical clinics, Medical Clinic II of the County Emergency Hospital and Medical Clinic I of the "Filantropia" Municipal Hospital in Craiova, has benefited from the services of some of the most valuable teachers who have marked its evolution, such as Prof. Tudorel Ciurea, Prof. Florin Petrescu and Prof. Constantin Petru Stancu.
Also, in these medical semiology clinics with an internal medicine profile, generations of residents and specialists in various medical specialties, primarily internal medicine but also other related specialties, have been trained over the years.
Teachers in the discipline have also participated in the postgraduate training of doctors by organising annual courses, symposia and round tables at local, national and international level.
The didactic activity of the teaching staff and the research activity with PhD students is focused on specific areas, namely tumour pathology of the digestive tract, liver pathology, respiratory pathology. In terms of editing of teaching materials and scientific papers, the discipline has over the years edited several valuable papers with national impact. Several editions of the Manual of Medical Semiology have been edited by Prof. Marius Georgescu and Prof. Tudorel Ciurea, which has been very well received by the medical world. Also, in 2021 a new edition of the Manual of Medical Semiology was published, edited by Prof. Paul Mitruț, Prof. Forțofoiu Mircea Cătălin and the late Prof. Florin Petrescu.
The teaching staff has published and publishes valuable scientific works in specialized journals in the country and abroad. Within the discipline there have been national grants and international multicentre studies in which the teaching staff has participated.
Our discipline is among the founders of the Romanian Society of Medical Semiology with significant participation in its actions. All members of the discipline are members of the Romanian Society of Internal Medicine and other professional societies and have a significant scientific activity (symposia, round tables).
