December 10, 2025, was dedicated to health prevention and education activities held on the occasion of the 2025 National Tobacco Consumption Prevention Campaign. During the event, visitors to the Christmas Market benefited from free dental evaluations and personalized recommendations for protecting their oral health.
The activity took place between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM at the UMF Craiova Caravan, located at the intersection of Lipscani and C.S. Nicolaescu-Plopșor streets.
The campaign promoted smoking and vaping cessation, the adoption of proper oral hygiene, and personal health responsibility. The dental evaluations and public information activities were conducted by teaching staff (Professor Dr. Adrian Camen, Associate Professor Dr. Oana Diaconu, Assistant Professor Dr. Andreea Stănuși), PhD students, and students from the medical and dental fields of UMF Craiova.
The event aimed to raise awareness regarding the harmful effects of smoking and vaping on the oral cavity, the increased risk of periodontal diseases, and the direct association with oral cancer; epidemiological data indicate that approximately 70% of oral cancer cases occur in smokers, with the risk being up to seven times higher compared to non-smokers.
The organizers conveyed the message that early detection can save lives, and regular dental check-ups are among the most effective methods for protecting oral health.
The event took place as part of the National Program for Health Evaluation and Promotion and Health Education, conducted by the Ministry of Health, under the auspices of the National Institute of Public Health and the Romanian College of Dental Medicine, under the slogan: 'Smoking steals your smile and... your life!'. The initiative was organized by the National Institute of Public Health, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova (Faculty of Dentistry), with the support of the Romanian College of Dental Medicine.
