INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

Biostatistics was formed as a continuation of the optional course in Biomathematics taught before 1989 to first year students by Professor Valentin Boju in the Department of Anatomy. In 1990, the subject of Biomathematics and Biostatistics became compulsory, and in 1991 it was transformed into the optional subject of Biostatistics, with the course and laboratories being taught by Assistant Badea Petrică. From the school year 1992-1993 the subject became part of the Department of Physiology and Physiopathology, together with the subject of Medical Informatics and became, due to the very wide audience among students, compulsory. Initially, the Biostatistics lecture and laboratories were held in the second year, and since the 1997-1998 school year they have been compulsory for first-year students.

The discipline has also developed as a result of its support by the staff of the department, Prof. PhD Valeriu Nestianu in particular, and the staff of the Medical Informatics Discipline Prof. PhD Eng. Tarata Mihai and Head of Works PhD Eng. Daniel Georgescu, who have supported over time the need for students to complete their knowledge with Biostatistics in addition to Medical Informatics.

The aim of the subject is to familiarize students with the concepts and techniques of medical statistics with the statistical processing of computer information, the use and interpretation of patient data to improve medical practice. Students have the opportunity to follow by example tables of real medical data, work with these data and design and build their own data tables.

Since the establishment of the Faculty of Dentistry, Biostatistics has been an optional subject, with the course being taught every year by Mat. Badea Petrică, the number of students enrolled being almost equal to the total number of students. Biostatistics is also part of the Medical Informatics and Biostatistics lecture, a compulsory course at the University College, the share of Biostatistics is one third.

Every year more and more people working in the medical or medical education network want to train in biostatistics and computer-based health information processing. Therefore, the offer of specialisation courses is increasingly diversified, through Biostatistics courses or Biostatistics modules within specialisation courses in Medical Informatics, courses in which there is a collaboration between Biostatistics and Medical Informatics disciplines.
