Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery (FMAM), created by GD. 635/11.06.2008, is the newest form of education at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Craiova, and at the level of 2009 is one of the four faculties of this kind in Romania (with FMAM of UMF "Gr T Popa" in Iasi, UMF "Carol Davila" in Bucharest and UMF "Iuliu Hatieganu” in Cluj).

Higher education in general nursing training begins at UMF Craiova in 1999 with the establishment of the University College of Medicine (CUM), under the leadership of Mr. Director Dr Fl Corniţescu, in accordance with Law 88 of 1993 on higher education accreditation and as a result of the 4051 Order of the Ministry of
National Education of 29 June 1998 about setting up medical colleges.
Establishment of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at UMF Craiova is in line with EU recommendations to address the regulated sector specializations, midwives and nurses, from a scientific position, which gives autonomy in health care work.
In 2009, FMAM of UMF Craiova hosts four Bachelor domaines: nurses and midwives (with long-term studies, 4 years), spa – physio - kinetic therapy and dental technique (short-term studies, three years).

To achieve the specific duties of each area's degree in hand, teachers of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry works closely with FMAM teachers.
FMAM teaches a number of 727 students: 461 at medical care specialty (339 in Cr
spa – physio - kinetic therapy specialization.

Their education is provided in the 2008-2009 academic year in FMAM of 103 teachers of which 101 are tenured of UMF Craiova (30 teachers of Nursing and Midwifery Faculty, 71 teachers of other faculties of UMF, Faculty of General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy), two part-time teachers being associated.

Teaching and research mission of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery is to prepare specialists in specific areas of Nursing and Midwifery in accordance with Law 307 of May 28, 2004 supplemented by Emergency Ordinance No. 144 of October 28, 2008 on the practice of nurse and midwife; to prepare specialists able to meet the requirements for maintaining the health of beneficiaries in the country and the whole space in and outside the European Community, knowing and applying the specific nursing process; to train specialists with skills research in the fields of nursing, which will allow raising this profession to the rank of science; to identify, support and facilitate the direct participation of graduates to educational process for prospective graduate students, gradually introducing the teaching process in addition to doctors, nurses and midwives; not least, to match the most modern techniques and methods of teaching professional knowledge, technical and medical, communication skills, in order to teach young people to protect life, health and care man through bio- psycho-social holistic approach.

Disciplines are provided in a logical sequence and define the general and specialized skills on the field of general nursing, in conjunction with the skills of university masters; are compatible with the national qualifications framework and the related EU programs, the proportion of subjects being expressed in ECTS credit study.

In the academic year 2007 - 2008 FMAM opened the first set of graduates. FMAM graduates have the opportunity for further learning in the second cycle university studies as a master, starting with the 2009-2010 academic year, accredited Masters Program being "Developing community nursing services."
Master opens the possibility of conducting systematic research by nurses and provide them the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies and to participate directly in the teaching activity of FMAM.
