Description

The Morphopathology Discipline was created in the autumn of 1972 in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Craiova, when the first class of students entered the third year of the faculty. The seat of the discipline was initially located in the building of the Faculty of Medicine in Petru Rareș Street 2-4.

The founder of the morpho-pathological education in Craiova is Prof. Dr. Ion Roșculescu, trained at the School of Pathological Anatomy of Professor Emil Crăciun in Bucharest. Here he also defended his doctorate with a controversial and exciting topic related to Balkan endemic nephropathy. It should be mentioned that Prof. Dr. Ion Rosculescu also laid the foundations of the Histology discipline, of which he was the provisional head from its foundation until its takeover by Prof. Dr. Florin Bogdan. Prof. Dr. Ion Rosculescu is also the pioneer of Pathological Anatomy in Oltene, being the one who established the first Pathological Anatomy Laboratory at Hospital No. 3 in Craiova, and then the one at Craiova County Hospital.

Since the beginning of the activity of the discipline, alongside Prof. Dr. Roșculescu, Dr. Bogdan Zaharia, also trained in the school of Professor Emil Crăciun, came as an assistant. In the 1978-1979 academic year, the discipline's team was enlarged by the arrival of Dr. Maria Florescu as assistant professor.

Since the 1981-1982 academic year, the discipline has moved to a new building, which occupies the entire third floor of the building on Mareșal Ion Antonescu Boulevard, and is now equipped with modern teaching equipment.

After 1990, the teaching staff of the discipline was continuously completed with university assistants: Dr. Cristiana Simionescu in 1990, Dr. Emil Pleșea in 1995, Dr. Camelia Foarfă in 1997 and Dr. Claudia Georgescu in 1998.

In 1993, Prof. Dr. Bogdan Zaharia took over the direction of the discipline, through the retirement of Prof. Dr. Ion Roșculescu, but he remained in the discipline as a consultant professor, his rich teaching and professional experience having been exploited through the direction of doctorates.

With the establishment of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1998, Prof. Maria Florescu took over the direction of the Department of Morpho-pathology in the Faculty of Dentistry, now the Faculty of Dental Medicine. In 2005, the discipline suffered a heavy loss with the premature death of Prof. Maria Florescu after a long suffering.

Since the academic year 1999-2000, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy established the University College for Nurses, Physiokinetic Therapy Section (2001-2002), then the Faculty of Midwifery and Nursing (2008), all with undergraduate fields, all with courses and practical work in Pathological Anatomy, which was taught by members of the discipline.

Since the academic year 2005-2006, the discipline's team has been enriched with new members, assistant professor dr. Raluca Ciurea (2005-2006), asist. univ. drd. Stepan Alex (2008-2009) and later with asist. univ. dr. Florescu Mirela Marinela (2017-2018), asist. univ. dr. Andreiana Bianca Cătălina (2020-2021) and asist. univ. dr. Badiu Anne Marie (2020-2021).

As auxiliary teaching staff, since the establishment of the discipline and until her retirement in 2000, Mariana Simescu worked as technician. Since 2000 and at present, Ms Nicoleta Ștefan has been working as a technician, and in 2023 Ms Manuela Tănasie joined the staff.
