The discipline of Internal Medicine was established in 1974 for teaching and research purposes. The initial staff of the Medical Clinic I consisted of Prof. univ. dr. Traian ROȘCA - head of the clinic and the university assistants: Dr. Nicolae CONSTANTINESCU, Dr. Constantin MANEA, Dr. Ioana BISTRICEANU, Dr. Vasile ȘTEFAN, Dr. Florea VOINEA. Prof. dr. I. Gr. POPESCU, Prof. dr. Ion ILINESCU have been in charge of the clinic over the years, and since 15 March 1995 and at present Prof. univ. dr. Tudorel CIUREA

 

At first, preoccupations in the field of gastroenterology began in 1980, first in Internal Medicine under the guidance of Prof. Marius Georgescu, head of the Medical Clinic II and of the discipline of Medical Semiology. Without a specific material base and adequate equipment, but with a team of young and enthusiastic doctors, the initial results of scientific research were only presented at national symposia and conferences. Subsequently, by passing the specialist examination, other gastroenterologists began their work in medical clinics in Craiova. 

Gastroenterology in Craiova, however, has known national and international affirmation since 2002 when, under the coordination of Prof. dr. Tudorel Ciurea, the Clinical Department of Gastroenterology was established, where, in addition to specialist and primary care physicians, gastroenterology resident physicians work. Since 2005, the Centre for Research in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, recognized by CNCSIS, has been established at the University of Craiova. The results of the work of the gastroenterology team have resulted in the publication of numerous articles in prestigious journals indexed ISI/Medline and specialist monographs useful for doctors who are completing their training in this field.
