Shakespeare and dramatic psychiatry. Current approaches

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova in partnership with the Shakespeare Foundation organizes the national symposium Clinical Psychopharmacology vs. Shakespeare-inspired Dramatic Psychiatry on the occasion of the 14th edition of the International Shakespeare Festival Craiova 2024.

This meeting of Shakespearean characters with specialists in contemporary psychiatry will take place on 17 May 2024, in the Aula Magna UMF Craiova ( 66, 1. Mai Boulevard), starting at 9.30 a.m.

         The analysis is structured in four distinct "acts": "Act I" - Personality disorders - the basis of psychopathological behaviour, "Act II" - Clinical psychopathology in dramatic psychiatry, "Act III" - Clinical psychopharmacology and dramatic psychiatry, "Act IV" - The drama of clinical psychiatry. At 2 p.m., also in the Aula Magnawe invite you to attend two very special book launches. UMF Craiova pays homage to one of the creators of the Craiovian school of psychiatry, Professor Alexandru Olaru, with the launch of the third edition of Shakespeare and Dramatic Psychiatry by Alexandru Olaru (Editura Medicală Universitară, Craiova, 2024), as well as the volume The Orange Man and Other Therapeutic Stories (Editura Trei, Bucharest, 2024) by prof. Doina Cosman (UMF "Iuliu Hațieganu", Cluj-Napoca), a work that provides the general public with information on how psychiatrists interact with their patients. The author presents vivid details and necessary explanations about diagnosis, medication and psychotherapeutic interventions.

         Dr. Alexandru Olaru (4 August 1923, Craiova - 3 March 2003, Craiova) was a spirit dedicated to interference and interdisciplinarity. A graduate in psychology, philosophy of culture and aesthetics, Dr. Al. Olaru began his career as a district doctor in Plopșor-Dolj, and in 1960 he became a primary care physician at Hospital No. 3 in Craiova, then head doctor of the Psychiatric Service of Hospital No. 3 in Craiova and of the Psychiatric Clinic. In parallel, he built a solid academic career at the Faculty of Medicine in Craiova, became a full member of the Academy of Medical Sciences in Bucharest and entered the gallery of honorary professors of the University of Medicine in Craiova. He established the Psychiatry Clinic in Craiova within the Polyclinics of Hospital No. 1 and Hospital No. 3, created the Mental Health Laboratory and was the first head of the disciplines of psychiatry and medical psychology at the Faculty of Medicine in Craiova.
