"Brâncuși and Beyond": An invitation to a dialogue between art, medicine, and humanism, at UMF Craiova

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova invites you on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, to the "Mihai Ioana" Amphitheater, Building A', 1st floor, for the third edition of the Medicine – Health – Humanism Symposium: "Brâncuși and Beyond", organized within CIMSC, 2026.

Admission to the symposium is free. Participation is open to everyone interested and does not require registration for CIMSC.

Constantin Brâncuși's work becomes the meeting point for perspectives from art, science, and medical education. Form, light, simplicity, and the practice of close observation will be explored in presentations that bring together specialists, faculty members, and students in a dialogue on the connections between artistic creation and the understanding of the human being.
The session proposes four complementary perspectives: George Dan Mogoșanu, representing CRIFST – Craiova Branch, will address the resonances between Brâncuși's modern sculpture and science, while Lucian Florin Rogneanu, from the Craiova Art Museum, will speak about the "tension of form" in the sculptor's creation.
The collaboration between the engineer and the sculptor, through the contribution of Ștefan-Ioan Georgescu-Gorjan, will be presented in a paper authored by Gheorghe Manolea, Horia-Octavian Manolea, and Mihai-David Manolea. Jonathan McFarland, from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and The Doctor as a Humanist, will explore the relationship between sculpture and medicine, drawing from the works of Brâncuși and Giacometti.
In the second part of the meeting, presentations by students and faculty members will explore the connections between sculpture and dental morphology, the experience of carving an incisor in soap during a Brâncuși-inspired workshop, the roles of light in art and medicine, and photography as an exercise in observation and understanding. The program will conclude with discussions and closing remarks.
The event is organized by UMF Craiova and the GUIDES group, in partnership with the Romanian Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology – Craiova Branch, the Craiova Art Museum, and The Doctor as a Humanist (DASH).
We look forward to welcoming you to discover together how art can invite us to look more closely, ask questions, and open new perspectives on medicine and the human experience!
